Brighton has been known as London By The Sea since Victorian times. Before the arrival of the railway in 1841 it was a fairly exclusive resort. Thereafter it grew into a mass tourist destination, especially for the London masses. Since then there has been a constant flow of population into Brighton from London. The Regency Town House is a grade 1 Listed terraced home of the mid-1820s being developed as a heritage centre and museum to focus on the architecture and social history of Brighton & Hove between the 1780s and 1840s. At this time in history, broadly defined as the Regency period, Brighton enjoyed an unrivalled status as the provincial capital of fashionable British society and was, perhaps, Europe's foremost seaside spa. A legacy that is, today, reflected in the city's rich architectural heritage. Funky fashions, chic boutiques, exclusive antiques, tempting jewellery, inspirational art...From the lifestyle shops of The Lanes to the unique shops of Hove; the retro chic of the North Laine to the big-name stores of Churchill Square and Brighton Marina, shopping in Brighton really is retail paradise. The Royal Pavilion is remarkable for its exotic oriental appearance both inside and out. This magnificent royal pleasure palace was revered by fashionable Regency society and is still a distinctive landmark for vibrant Brighton & Hove today. The Royal Pavilion is also home to some of the finest collections and examples of the chinoiserie style in Britain. Brighton Dome, a fantastic building host various concerts and plays it was inspired by the Corn Exchange in Paris and originally covered with a huge segmented glass dome, this remarkable building was designed as the Prince Regent's riding stables and was finally completed in 1805. Brighton is a fantastic day out and is only 50 miles from London. More than two centuries later the city has lost none of its allure, continuing to attract a host of famous residents, including dance-music guru Fatboy Slim, actor/comedian Mark Williams (of Shakespeare In Love and 101 Dalmatians fame) and former world super-middleweight boxing champion Chris Eubank. Laurence Olivier was also a long-time resident. Sir Paul McCartney and The Who front man Roger Daltrey live close by.
